Consumer Alert: Parents Should Keep Children Away From new Video Chat Web Site Chatroulette.com

Constable Phil Camus wishes to pass on the following safety information that was received by his office, please read below for safety alerts received from the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Attorney General’s office:
FROM THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE:

Consumer Alert: Parents Should Keep Children Away From new Video Chat Web Site Chatroulette.com

An increasingly popular Web site poses a threat to Texas children by giving users – including dangerous sex offenders – an opportunity to conduct live video chats with randomly selected participants.

Armed with only a Web camera and Internet access, www.chatroulette.com users are paired with a random stranger for a video chat. Neither a login nor registration is required before young users can be face-to-face with a total stranger. Worse, users who simply click “next” are shuffled to a new video chat partner.

An undercover investigation by the Cyber Crimes Unit revealed startling results. Nearly half of the randomly selected users encountered by Cyber Crimes investigators immediately exposed themselves and conducted sexually explicit acts on camera.

In light of the serious threat that children will be exposed to graphic sexual conduct, Texas parents should prohibit their children from accessing www.chatroulette.com. Although site users are supposed to be at least 16 years old, the rule is not clearly enforced – which means parents’ preventative role is particularly important.

Attorney General Abbott reminds parents to closely monitor their children’s Internet activities by using the following safety tips:

• Place the computer in a public room at home so that parents can monitor their children’s Internet use. Do not allow computers in a child’s bedroom or permit the use of Web cameras.
• Make sure children know never to agree to a face-to-face meeting with someone they meet online and never to divulge personal information to an Internet stranger.
• Stay informed. Surf the Internet with children or at least talk to them about the Web sites they are visiting.
• Establish ground rules for children’s Internet usage, including the hours they may surf and the kinds of Web sites they may visit. Post the rules near the computer.

House broken into in Southlake Village

One of my friend's houses was broken into yesterday.  She lives in Southlake Village and is gone quite a bit but her husband is usually there some during the week.
She says:
I do live at the end of a cu-de-sac in a gated community, but have easy access to South Lake Village Dr and Cinco Ranch Blvd thru a walk thru opening in the rod iron fence along South Lake Village Dr.  The pool guy called me this morning to tell me that a window in the back had been broken. We had a friend go by the house and call the Fort Bend Sheriff---they got there really fast.  Anyway---they said that on Thurs between 11am to 1 pm  several other houses "in the area" were also burglarized with the same MO--broke a window pane on the back porch, unlocked the window and crawled in.  All the robber seemed to be looking for was jewelry and piggy banks or loose money by rummaging thru drawers in the master  bedroom and bath. So far, we haven't been able to determine that anything is missing.

It sure is a weird feeling knowing that someone was in my house!!!!  Thankfully, no one was at home and at this point nothing of any value seems to be missing.   I refer to "him" because the  sheriff did say there was a large shoe print---something like a work boot.  Just wanted to give all of you a heads up--especially since it was a day time thing and there were several houses involved on the same day.

The Cinco Spirit is back in monthly circulation!

The story of The Cinco Spirit is similar to the story of the Phoenix.  You know the bird that rises from its ashes. Many years ago, Cinco Ranch printed a monthly newsletter call The Cinco Spirit.  I for one looked forward to sitting in my comfortable chair with a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning to read The Cinco Spirit.   With the creation of the website in 2003 and cost cutting pressures, the monthly newsletter became the quarterly newsletter.  Eventually, the newsletter was converted to PDF format and made available on the internet.   All very convenient for most but something was missing…  You might say the Cinco Spirit died…
Through the generous offer of Krenek Printing Company the Cinco Spirit rises from the ashes and becomes a monthly publication again.  The Cinco Residential Property Association has entered into an agreement with Krenek Printing to publish material about association operations and events. Of course, other community groups will continue to include their information in this fine publication that many of us have grown to count on. By cooperating with Krenek, we will be able to “get the word out” on a monthly basis without mailing and labor expenses to the association.

In future months, we plan to feature articles highlighting pressing issues in our community, the work of the Board of Directors and the work of the Neighborhood Representative Committee as well as other committees and groups within Cinco Ranch. If you have been submitting material directly to Krenek Printing, please continue to do so. If you are involved with association operations, please send your material to community manager at cincoranchcustomercare@pcmi-us.com. If you have an idea for an article or a column or want to write an article, send that along as well…

Richard Wendrock
