Fine-Tune Your Irrigation System To Save Money and See Better Results

Summer is in full swing, the sun is shining bright and picnics and barbecues are the order of the day. But you may not know that July is also Smart Irrigation Month. Here are 10 tips from Rain Bird and the Irrigation Association® to help you save money and water while keeping your yard beautiful all summer long...

Sprinkler spraying water Automatic irrigation systems offer convenience in protecting your landscape investment. Enjoy your yard, keep it healthy and beautiful while you water efficiently and you will save time and money. With some simple practices and new technology, your existing irrigation system can be made more efficient, lowering your water bill, reducing run-off and eliminating waste. Waterwise habits like these will result in a healthier lawn and landscape, in addition to conserving water.

  1. Adapt your watering schedule to the weather and the season. Familiarize yourself with the settings on your irrigation controller. Adjust the watering schedule regularly based on current weather conditions.
  2. Properly schedule the run times for each individual zone in your irrigation system. "Scheduling" accounts for the type of sprinkler, sun or shade exposure and the soil type for the different areas in your yard. Rarely will you run each zone in your system for the same amount of time.
  3. Inspect your system monthly. Check for leaks, broken or clogged heads, and other problems, or hire an irrigation professional to regularly check your system. Clean drip irrigation filters as needed and make sure to check for clogged emitters.
  4. Adjust your sprinkler heads. Correct obstructions that prevent sprinklers from distributing water evenly. Make sure water is not hitting the pavement, driveways or buildings.
  5. Get a professional system audit. Hire a professional to conduct an irrigation audit and uniformity test to make sure areas are being watered evenly. This can be especially helpful if you notice areas being under-watered or see brown spots. The Irrigation Association maintains an online list of IA Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditors.
  6. Consider "smart" technology. Climate-based "smart" controllers like the Rain Bird ET Manager evaluate weather conditions and then calculate and automatically adjust your irrigation schedule to meet the specific watering needs of your landscape.
  7. Install a rain shutoff sensor -- inexpensive and effective. Required by law in many states, these money-saving sensors turn off your sprinkler system in rainy weather and help to compensate for natural rainfall. These devices can be easily retrofitted to almost any system.
  8. Consider low volume drip irrigation for plant beds, shrubs and trees. Install micro irrigation for gardens, trees and shrubs. Micro irrigation includes point source drip emitters, dripline or emitter tubing, micro sprays, micro-sprinklers, and bubbler irrigation that irrigates slowly and directly to the plant roots which minimizes evaporation, runoff and overspray. Learn more about Drip Irrigation.
  9. Water at the optimum time. Water early in the morning when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cool - between 5-10 am - to reduce evaporation. You can lose as much as 30% of water to evaporation by watering mid-day.
  10. Water only when needed. Saturate root zones and let the soil dry. Watering too much and too frequently results in wasted water, shallow roots, weed growth, disease and fungus.

The best advice for a healthy, drought- and stress-tolerant lawn and landscape: use less water. These tips will help keep more money in your wallet instead of sending it down the drain.

Be sure to check with your local water agency for any restrictions in watering your yard and garden. To learn more about water-efficient automatic sprinkler systems, or for more water-savings tips, please visit www.rainbird.com.

Proper Disposal of Prescription Drugs

Federal Guidelines from the Office of National Drug Control Policy

  • Take advantage of community pharmaceutical take-back programs that allow the public to bring unused drugs to a central location for proper disposal. Pharmaceutical take-back programs are a good way to dispose of unused pharmaceuticals. Call the Hazardous Waste facility in your area for more information.
  • Take unused, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs out of their original containers and throw them in the trash. Mixing Prescription drugs with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter, and putting them in impermeable, non-descript containers, such as empty cans or sealable bags, will further ensure the drugs are not diverted.
  • Flush prescription drugs down the toilet ONLY if the label or accompanying patient information specifically instructs doing so (see box).

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT - SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

While we enjoy the pools and the children playing, our troops are in need of items that will make their stay outside their country feel more like home.

Neighborhoods will be getting together August 5th. It will give us an opportunity to let our troops brother, sister, father, son, mother, or daughter know how much we care.

With the assistance of the Army and the Marines recruiting of Katy, I am asking residents of the Katy, Cinco Ranch community to help support our troops by participating in the fund drive.

You can send an E-Card, (letssaythanks.com) and choose from the list of packages offering a number of items, food, candy personal supplies, and toiletries. Writing letters or a drawing from children are just some of the ways to let them know how much we appreciate and love them.

You can contact me any time,

Ziznedth Kelly

832-755-4100

Volunteers welcome

We will be collecting these items at the south Beach Club in Cinco Ranch at 3131 South Lake Village between the hours of 4:00 pm and 9:00 pm on August 5th, 2008.

Helpful Tips

Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little stringy things' off of it.

Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!

Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating.

Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.

Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.

For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.

Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.

Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simply chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream. Yummy!

Heat up left over pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza.

I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works. Easy Deviled Eggs Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.

Expanding Frosting When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.

Reheating refrigerated bread To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.

Newspaper weeds away Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.

Broken Glass Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.

No More Mosquitoes Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

Squirrel Away! To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

Flexible vacuum To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.

Reducing Static Cling Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and ta da! ... static is gone.

Measuring Cups Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

Foggy Windshield? Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car . When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!

Reopening envelope If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.

Conditioner Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.

Goodbye Fruit Flies To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

Get Rid of Ants Put small piles of corn meal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home, can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load of clothes.) He took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material ... I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. Well ...the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free ... that nice fragrance too. You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box ... well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very longtime (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?! Learn something new every day! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I'd share!

Note: I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it ... the water ran right thru the screen! There wasn't any puddling at all!

That repairman knew what he was talking about!

Summer Saturdays in Cinco Presents

New this year for Cinco Ranch POA Special Events will be “Saturday Mornings in Cinco”. These events are sponsored by your Cinco Ranch POA in partnership with ARTreach, Young Audiences of Houston, LaCenterra, and SimplyCinco. Through these partnerships, we are able to offer six different artistic performances during the months of June, July and August on both the third and fourth Saturday mornings of each of those months. We have arranged to have the three library-style events in SimplyCinco, located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd, Suite C 130 in LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch, and the more energetic type events on the outdoor stage in Heritage Square in LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch.

Because the indoor facility has a space capacity, we will have to limit the number of participants that attend the events in SimplyCinco. However, in order to provide this type of entertainment to the most participants we can, SimplyCinco has agreed to allow us to provide a second show on the same morning each month in their location! This allows us to have both a 10:30 a.m. show as well as an 11:45 a.m. show!

Twenty-five advance tickets for each of these indoor capacity-restricted shows are available on a first come, first serve basis at the Cinco Ranch POA office for residents. Please present your pool key and request the number of tickets per child that you require and for which date and show time (tickets not necessary for the accompanied adults).

Ticket-holders for the 10:30 shows scheduled at SimplyCinco must present their tickets for admission no sooner than 10:00 a.m. but no later than 10:10 a.m. Guests will be granted admission at 10:15 a.m. for all remaining spots to capacity, including any open spots due to “no-shows” from the advance tickets; and, advance tickets would then no longer be accepted for admission.

Ticket-holders for the 11:45 shows scheduled at SimplyCinco must present their tickets for admission at 11:25 a.m. Guests will be granted admission at 11:30 a.m. for all remaining spots to fill capacity, including any open spots due to “no-shows” from the advance tickets; and, advance tickets would then no longer be accepted for admission. We hope that this helps create a full capacity crowd of Cinco Ranch residents as well as a smooth and organized entry system as we utilize this business’ space for our event and we do appreciate your assistance during the check-in process at the door.

The outdoor stage in Heritage Square in LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch provides us with a wonderful open space and we hope that many residents take advantage of the opportunities for kid-friendly entertainment there this summer.

The complete schedule for Saturday Mornings in Cinco hosted for us at LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch is listed in the Event Flyer.

Please be watchful and report all that seems suspicious in our area.

This event was submitted by a Cinco Ranch Resident.

Please make residents aware that leaving valuables in your car is never a good idea.

Monday afternoon, June 23rd around 2:15-2:30, my daughter parked her car in the Beach Club parking lot to walk the lakes. She placed her purse on the floor in the back and locked the car. There were about five other cars in the parking lot with people around using the swings, etc. When she returned, the back side window of her black Lexus was broken and her purse gone. All the people were gone and all the other cars were gone. Kristi thinks the thief watched her put her purse in the back, because he took nothing from the front of her car.

If anyone saw this incident, would you please give us some details…type of auto or description of the thief. A police report has been filed.

Later that afternoon around 6:00, I drove by the beach club again and saw a suspicious looking auto slowing driving around. It was a small car (like a Ford Echo), light gold metallic color, dented passenger side, no license plate except a fake paper one in the rear window with the numbers 82…..90 written on it. I followed him (med, skinned male talking on cell phone) and he drove into the entrance to the custom Estate section. He waited there until a resident came up opening the gate. The little car then scooted in right behind the resident’s car.

I called our sheriff dispatcher to come investigate, but the little car exited the Estate section in about 15 minutes before the sheriff arrived. I followed again but wanted a safe distance….and lost sight of the car.

Please be watchful and report all that seems suspicious in our area. If you have any information about yesterday’s incidents I would appreciate a call.

Thank you, Lenore Tasker, Simply Cinco 281-395-2200
